Roof Substrate "interroof-intensiv"

According to FLL Directive

The roof substrate interroof-intensiv is a ready-to-use, blowable substrate according to FLL consisting of pumice, lava and compost.

A large variety of plants is available for intensive greening. The intensive greening is therefore comparable with a typical green area.

About Intensive Substrates for Green Roofs

Intensive green roofs are often what most people imagine a green roof to be. They are comparable to typical gardens and green spaces. Therefore these green roofs correspond to a green oasis on the roof.

An intensive green roof differs from an extensive green roof in the construction heights of the roof substrates used. For low altitudes, i.e. up to 15 cm, one speaks of an extensive green roof. From a roof substrate height of 15 cm, it is an intensive green roof.

Flat roofs or roofs with only slight inclination are suitable for such green roofs. With flat roofs, one can generally distinguish between two different types of roof:

  • Warm roofs
  • Cold roofs

Cold roofs are ventilated. It means that after the roof is sealed, a separating layer and insulation, a rear-ventilation segment follows. It always represents a static weak point. Therefore cold roofs are not very suitable for intensive greening.

Warm roofs manage without rear ventilation, i.e. without an intermediate air layer, and therefore have no static disadvantages. Thus warm roofs generally have better conditions for such green roofs.

With an intensive green roof, the substrate has a height of more than 25 cm. So the roof has to support the substrate and the plants. Also, the roof substrate absorbs and stores the moisture from the rain. It means a further weight load. The additional burden usually has to be taken into account at the construction planning stage. Here, amounts of over 300 kg/m² must be taken into account. With extensive greening, on the other hand, the additional load of only over 50 kg/m² is significantly lower.

Depending on the structural conditions, a green roof offers a wide range of design options such as:

  • lawn areas with perennials
  • woody plants
  • trees

An intensive greening shows many advantages like:

  • good microclimate
  • optimal extended use
  • improved sound and heat insulation
  • optimal drainage effect
  • water buffer storage
  • reduced UV radiation and extended service life of the roof

It is associated with a somewhat higher effort for the care, as it is, however, equivalent to a typical garden. Depending on the structure of the green roof, individual plants can be considered for greening. Regular watering and supply of nutrients are also important.

INTERBIMS offers here coordinated roof substrate solutions that can be adapted to local conditions such as building specific, plant-specific, but also climatic and weather-related factors. Thus, the respective location with sunny and shady areas or also climatic conditions and amounts of precipitation with the corresponding plant substrate are essential prerequisites for a permanently beautiful green roof with high utility value.
